Electricity Market Competition in SA

The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to a different state.

The next step, which happened sooner in some states, was the dividing up of state owned electricity monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to produce a greater degree of competition the market was split into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors have the responsibility for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the poles and powerlines, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. States have between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.

On 1 July 2013 , the South Australia electricity market was fully deregulated. This meant that customers could now switch to a provider who had cheaper electricity prices.

South Australia has only one main electricity distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks supplies electricity in South Australia
  • Note, electricity in a few remote areas of SA are supplied by other companies.

Tips to lower energy consumption to save on your bills

Here are some easy to implement ways to reduce your expenditure on energy

  • Avoid using the clothes dryer. Instead, dry your clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, put on warmer clothing (jumper, beanie, warm socks, booties).
  • Turn all your appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent hot or cold air entering or escaping via gaps under doors or around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating your house by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Close the doors to areas of your home that you don't use, so that you just heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening your windows in the evening let the cooler air in, and closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
  • Reduce your use of lights. Use natural light more often.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and you have made the decision to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new energy provider allows you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to cancel the process and remain with your old energy provider.
No. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor will continue to supply the energy to your premises even if you switch over to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from the distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be confident that your energy supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the final switchover will not take place until your present provider has sent your final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. Therefore, it depends on how long until your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will also inform your current provider that you are changing to another retailer. The change to the new provider won't happen straight away, though, because the old provider has to do a meter reading one final time. then send you their final bill. Your new provider will start charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who feeds the energy to your premises continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by your new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
