Electricity Market Competition in SA

Australia's electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation was the establishing of a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to a different state.

Another stage, which happened earlier in some states, was the breaking up of state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate a greater degree of competition the market was separated into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors look after the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises . They own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers do all the interacting with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. States have between one and three distributors, and up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2013 , the South Australia electricity market was completely deregulated. This meant that customers could, for the first time, change to another provider who had cheaper electricity prices.

South Australia has just one main electricity distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks supplies electricity in South Australia
  • Note, electricity in a some remote areas of SA is distributed by other companies.

Tips for reducing your energy usage to save on your bills

Here are a few easily implemented ways for reducing your expenditure on energy

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Don't use the clothes dryer as often. Dry your clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Dress for cold weather, rather than turn on the heater, (jumper, beanie, booties, warm socks).
  • Minimise draughts. Prevent hot or cold air blowing in or leaving through gaps under doors and around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Close the doors to areas of your home that aren't in use, so that you only have to cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening windows in the evening let the cool air in, and then closing them each morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Prevent the hot sun over-heating rooms by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Reduce your use of lights through the use of as much natural light as possible.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and have chosen to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new energy provider will allow you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to change your mind and remain with your old energy provider.
No. You won't need to do anything like that. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). That distributor will continue to supply energy to your premises when you change over to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your energy bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor at wholesale rates and resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from the distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be sure that there won't be any interruption to your energy supply when you switch retailers, because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the switchover won't happen until after your old provider has issued you their final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. Therefore, it depends on how long until your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we also tell the current provider that you're changing providers. The switch to the new provider won't happen straight away, though, because the current provider will have to do a meter reading one final time. then send you their final bill. The new provider only starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who feeds the energy to your house continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will, however, be paid a commission by your new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
