Electricity Market Deregulation in SA

Australia's electricity market has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process ever since the late 1990s. The first step involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in a different state.

Another stage, which happened sooner in some states than others, was the breaking up of state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate greater competition the market was split into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors have the responsibility for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises . They own and maintain the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers sell the electricity to the customers and are responsible for billing. Each state has from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2013 , the electricity market in South Australia was completely deregulated. This allowed customers to change to whichever provider had cheaper electricity prices.

South Australia only has one main electricity distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks distributes electricity throughout South Australia
  • Note, in some remote areas of SA, electricity is supplied by other companies.

Tips for reducing your electricity usage to save money

Here are some easy to implement tips for reducing your electricity consumption

  • Minimise use of your clothes dryer. Hang the clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air blowing in or leaving via gaps under doors or around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear warm clothing (booties, jumper, beanie, warm socks).
  • Turn off all your appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so that you just cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating rooms by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening the windows at night to let the house cool down, and closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Use less lighting by using natural light where possible and replace older lights with energy efficient LED lights.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and you have made the choice to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity provider will give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and stay with your old energy provider.
No. You won't need to do anything like that. The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). The distributor will continue to supply electricity to your premises even if you change to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from your distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, your electricity supply won't be interrupted because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. However, the actual switchover cannot take place until after your old provider has issued your final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading is. It be up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will tell your present provider that you're moving to another provider. The changeover to your new provider won't happen immediately, though, because your current provider will have to read your meter one final time. and then send you a final bill. The new provider will start charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that feeds the energy to your home continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. Instead, we will be paid a commission by your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
