Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in NSW

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered in another state.

The next step, which happened sooner in some states than others, was the dividing up of state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to create better competition the market was separated into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors have the responsibility for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers sell the electricity to the customers and are responsible for billing. States have from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

NSW 's electricity market was completely deregulated on 1 July 2014 . This meant that customers could, for the first time, switch to the provider that had the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by the following three distributors

  • Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy supplies electricity to 2.4 million people in households and businesses throughout the Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains and Sydney's Greater West.
  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity country and regional NSW, and also throughout southern regional QLD.
  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid supplies energy to eastern, northern and inner metropolitan Sydney and north to the Hunter region and Newcastle.

Tips for reducing your electricity consumption to save money

Here are a few easily implemented ways to reduce your electricity consumption

  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather (beanie, warm socks, jumper, booties).
  • Reduce use of your clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise hot or cold air getting in or out through gaps under doors and around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn off all your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening the windows during the night to allow the cool air in, and then closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
  • Reduce your use of lights. Use natural lighting where possible.
  • Close the doors of rooms that you aren't using, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating your house by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and you have made the decision that you want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity provider will allow you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply electricity to your house when you switch over to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, but they buy the energy at wholesale prices from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from your distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, your electricity supply won't be interrupted because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually within 24 hours. However, the actual switchover won't happen until your present provider has issued your final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your next meter reading takes place. It be up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will inform your present provider that you are leaving them. The actual transfer to your new provider won't happen straight away, because your current provider needs to do a final meter reading. and then issue you a final bill. Your new provider only starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who feeds the energy to your home continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. However, we will receive a commission from your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
