Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in SA

Australia's electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation process which began in the late 1990s. The first stage was to establish a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in other states.

Another stage, which happened earlier in some states, was the breaking up of the state owned monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate a greater degree of competition the energy market was separated into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors look after the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers do all the interacting with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. Every state has between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2013 , the South Australia electricity market was completely deregulated. This meant that consumers could change to another provider who had cheaper electricity prices.

South Australia has only one main electricity distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks distributes electricity in South Australia
  • Note, electricity in a some remote areas of SA is distributed by other companies.

Tips to reduce your electricity usage and lower your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented tips for reducing your electricity consumption

  • Use the clothes dryer less. Dry your clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Turn appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Minimise draughts. Prevent hot or cold air blowing in or leaving through the gaps under doors and around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather, instead of turning on the heater (jumper, beanie, booties, warm socks).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Close the doors to rooms that aren't in use, so that you only have to cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening windows in the evening let the cool air in, and then shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Prevent the hot sun over-heating rooms by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Minimise lighting by making use of the available natural light and replace older lights with energy efficient LED lighting.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and have chosen to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity provider has to give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to change your mind and remain with your old energy provider.
No. You won't need to do anything like that. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). That distributor will continue to supply electricity to your premises after you change to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from your distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be sure that there won't be any interruption to your electricity supply when you switch retailers, because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in less than 24 hours. However, the switchover can't go ahead until after your old provider has issued you their final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. Therefore, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we also tell the current provider that you are switching away from them. The switch to the new provider will not happen immediately, because the current provider will have to do a meter reading one final time. then issue you their final bill. The new provider only begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your house continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will, however, be paid a commission by your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
