The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a process of deregulation ever since the late 1990s. The first step was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in a different state.
The next stage, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the splitting up of state owned monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to promote a greater amount of competition the market was separated into two levels
- Energy
Distributors
The distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers. - Energy Retailers The electricity retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Each state has between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.
The South East Queensland market was fully deregulated on 1 July 2016 . This meant that customers could switch to the provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.
Two electricity distributors supply all of Queensland
- Energex
Energex distributes electricity to premises in an area covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, that stretches from the border of NSW in the south to Gympie in the north. This includes Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay. - Ergon Energy
Ergon Energy supplies electricity to Queensland including coastal and rural areas as well as the remote communities of outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.
Tips to lower energy consumption and lower your bills
Here are a few easily implemented tips to reduce your expenditure on energy
- Turn off your appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
- Instead of turning on the heater, wear warmer clothing (warm socks, jumper, booties, beanie).
- Avoid use of the clothes dryer. Instead, dry the clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
- Eliminate draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Use less lighting. Use natural light more often. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
- Stop the sun from over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.
- Close the doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so you just heat or cool a smaller space.
- Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening windows at night to allow the house cool down, and then closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
